Planning Your Next Outage? Spec the Equipment Now

Outage windows don't move. The equipment you're counting on to go in during that window has to be designed, built, and ready before the date arrives. For custom heavy equipment, that work starts well before the purchase order.

That makes right now, while next year's budgets are being built, the time to start the conversation.

What goes into custom equipment

Custom-engineered equipment isn't pulled off a shelf. A typical project includes:

  • A site review and field measurements

  • Engineering and design

  • Approval drawings and your team's review

  • Fabrication, machining, and assembly

  • Testing and preparation for shipment

  • Installation during your outage

Every step deserves the time to be done right. Rushing any of them is how equipment ends up fitting poorly, underperforming, or getting reworked in the field during the outage you were trying to protect

Start with the equipment that's costing you the most

Most mills already know which pieces are the problem. They're the ones in the maintenance logs every month: the transfer car that keeps losing bearings, the scrap bucket in the repair bay again, the roll table that has been patched more times than anyone wants to admit.

That equipment is the best place to start.

Gather what you have

You don't need a finished spec to start a conversation. Useful starting points include:

  • Maintenance history and repair records

  • Existing drawings, even old or incomplete ones

  • Key dimensions and site constraints

  • Input from the supervisors and operators who deal with the equipment every day

The people on the floor often know exactly what's wrong and what would fix it. Bring them into the conversation early.

Put a real number in the budget

A placeholder in the capital budget is a guess. An early engineering conversation turns it into a number grounded in your actual equipment and site. That makes approvals easier and prevents the scramble when the real quote comes in.

Replace it once

The goal isn't just equipment that's ready for the outage. It's equipment that won't come back up on the list in a few years. Some BTS equipment is still running in mills decades after installation, and that starts with giving the design the attention it needs up front.

Schedule a site visit with our engineers before year end. We'll look at the equipment on your list and help you plan it into your next outage.
